In 1990, a group of animal advocates banded together to provide financial help to those who were too poor to spay or neuter their pets. Two years later we became a nonprofit and won the contract to operate the animal shelter on behalf of the City of EspaƱola. Under city management, the shelter had essentially been a warehouse where animals were held until they could be euthanized.
Through hands-on hard work and dedication, EVHS has transformed the facility into a humane shelter that provides safe, clean quarters for over 4,000 animals every year. We also operate a low-cost spay/neuter program to combat rampant pet overpopulation in this impoverished region.
