Española Humane is searching for a Shelter Manager who is committed to life saving programs and services to join the dedicated team. The Shelter Manager is upbeat, enthusiastic with a strong desire to help people and pets. Empathetic communication skills and a strong desire to connect with community members, staff and volunteers are essential qualities of the candidate. Exceptionally strong interpersonal skills and the ability to forge effective relationships with a wide variety of people in a wide variety of circumstances will insure the Shelter Manager’s success.
The Shelter Manager reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the shelters functions that include animal intake and receiving, adoptions, foster and rescue transfer, kennel cleaning and shelter animal care and health. The position manages three supervisors with a total staff of twelve. Key work partners are the Clinic Director and Shelter Medicine Veterinarian.
The position is exempt, full-time with excellent benefits and a flexible schedule, typically Monday – Friday.
A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a managerial role ideally completed through work at an animal nonprofit or rescue organization. Strong ability to serve as staff leader and mentor; excellent supervision and staff/volunteer support skills with proven ability to work with different work styles and to facilitate clear communication. Solid computer skills including familiarity with popular record keeping and word processing programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, and database management software). Sound financial and data management skills, including clear financial responsibility and authority for managing similar-sized (or larger) budgets and ability to ensure accurate reporting.
